SEND Teaching Assistant – Primary Specialist School – Southampton
Full-Time | Term-Time Only | September Start
Are you passionate about supporting children with special educational needs? Do you have the resilience, empathy, and dedication to make a real difference in a child’s day? If so, this could be the ideal opportunity for you.
We are currently seeking a committed and enthusiastic SEND Teaching Assistant to join a highly respected primary specialist school in Southampton. This full-time role begins in September 2025 and offers the chance to work in a rewarding and meaningful educational setting, supporting pupils aged 4–11 years with complex learning difficulties.
Our school caters for children with a range of severe and profound learning difficulties, and many of our pupils have autism, speech and language disorders, sensory impairments, or additional physical and emotional needs. A number of pupils experience high levels of dysregulation, anxiety and challenging behaviour, and all have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that sets out their individual needs and learning targets.
As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in the daily life of the classroom—supporting children’s learning, promoting their independence, and helping them manage their emotions and behaviour in a safe and structured environment.
What you’ll be doing:
Supporting pupils in the classroom under the guidance of the class teacher
Assisting with communication, sensory needs, and learning activities tailored to each child’s EHCP
Helping children develop social and emotional regulation strategies
Using a variety of tools and approaches such as PECS, Makaton, sensory play, and other specialist resources
Working closely with a skilled and supportive team of teachers, therapists and support staff
Helping to create a calm, consistent and engaging learning environment
We’re looking for someone who:
Has experience working with children with complex SEND or in a specialist school setting (desirable but not essential)
Is patient, calm, and confident in managing behaviour that may be challenging
Has an understanding of the needs of children with autism, speech and language difficulties, and sensory processing issues
Is enthusiastic, reliable, and works well as part of a team
Has a genuine passion for helping children learn, grow and thrive
In return, the school offers a warm and welcoming environment, ongoing training and development, and the chance to be part of a team that truly values the difference support staff make every single day.
Location: Southampton
Start Date: September 2025
Contract Type: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Salary: Based on experience and within TA pay scale
If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact and grow your career in SEND education, we’d love to hear from you.
