A forward-thinking secondary school in Barnet is looking to appoint a skilled and compassionate ASD Specialist Teaching Assistant to support students with autism, including those with high sensory needs and communication differences. The role will also involve personal care support, so confidence in delivering this aspect of care is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide tailored 1:1 or small group support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Assist with personal care tasks, including toileting and hygiene routines
Use strategies such as visual schedules, social stories, and structured routines to support engagement and emotional regulation
Promote independence and inclusion both in and outside the classroom
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and SENCOs to adapt learning and meet EHCP targets
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Proven experience supporting young people with ASD, preferably in a secondary or specialist setting
Understanding of sensory processing needs and autism-specific strategies
Experience and confidence in delivering personal care in a respectful and professional manner
A calm, patient and proactive approach to behaviour and communication challenges
Training in approaches such as PECS, Makaton, or TEACCH (desirable but not essential)
