SEMH Teaching Assistant – Primary SEND School
Location: Bournemouth, Dorset
Start Date: February 2026
Hours: Full-Time, Term Time Only (Monday to Friday, 08:30–15:30)
Pay: £90–£100 per day (dependent on experience)
We are working in partnership with a specialist primary SEND school in Bournemouth that is seeking an experienced and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from February 2026.
This is a long-term opportunity supporting primary-aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The role involves providing 1:1 and small group support to help pupils regulate emotions, develop positive behaviour and re-engage with learning in a structured and nurturing primary school environment.
The school is particularly keen to hear from candidates with a background in sports coaching, mentoring, youth work or behaviour support, as physical activity, structure and positive role modelling form a key part of their approach.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide targeted 1:1 SEMH support to primary-aged pupils
Support emotional regulation, behaviour management and engagement in learning
Implement positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
Assist with classroom learning, interventions and structured activities
Build strong, consistent relationships with pupils who present challenging behaviour
Work closely with class teachers, SENDCO and pastoral staff
Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes and unstructured periods
Candidate Requirements:
Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND, ASC or behavioural needs
Calm, patient and resilient approach to behaviour support
Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
Background in sport, coaching, mentoring or youth work is desirable
Willingness to undertake ongoing training and adhere to safeguarding procedures
Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply
