Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Location: Tower Hamlets
Job Purpose
To support high-quality teaching and learning across the primary phase, working under the direction of teaching staff to deliver learning activities and provide targeted support. As an HLTA, you will take on increased responsibility, including planning and delivering lessons, covering classes in teachers’ absence, and helping raise standards across the school.
Key Responsibilities
• Work with teachers to plan and deliver learning activities in line with the primary curriculum (EYFS–KS2).
• Lead whole-class teaching when required (e.g. during PPA cover, staff absence, or intervention time).
• Support individual pupils and small groups, including those with SEND, EAL, or who are working below age-related expectations.
• Deliver specific intervention programmes in literacy, numeracy, phonics, or emotional well-being.
• Assist in assessing pupils’ progress and reporting back to the class teacher.
• Prepare resources and organise the learning environment to support active, engaging learning.
• Contribute to classroom behaviour management, encouraging positive choices.
• Foster strong relationships with pupils, staff, and parents, supporting the school’s ethos and values.
Requirements:
• HLTA status or evidence of working towards it
• Experience working in a UK primary school setting
• Ability to lead whole-class sessions with confidence and clarity
• Good understanding of the primary national curriculum and phonics teaching
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• A warm, patient, and proactive approach to working with children
• Knowledge of phonics programmes
• Experience supporting children with additional needs (e.g. EHCPs, SEMH, ASD)
