Job Title: Teaching Assistant
SEND Teaching Assistant – Secondary Alternative Provision – Barking & Dagenham
From £105 per day | Full-Time | Long-Term | Start After May Half Term
Axcis are working with a well-established alternative provision school in Barking & Dagenham who are seeking a confident, resilient and relationship-focused SEND Teaching Assistant to join their team after May half term.
This setting supports young people aged 11–16 who have experienced difficulties in mainstream education, including pupils who may have been permanently excluded, on fixed-term exclusion, on respite placements, or working towards a successful return to mainstream school. The school places strong emphasis on helping students make positive choices, rebuild confidence and develop the skills needed for their next steps in education, training or employment.
Many pupils have experienced behavioural, emotional or social difficulties, and the school provides a structured, supportive environment where consistency, patience and strong relationships are essential. The school’s SEND provision includes support for a range of needs, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, speech and language needs, cognition and learning differences, and SEMH.
About the Role
You will be supporting pupils across KS3 and KS4 who may require additional help with engagement, behaviour, emotional regulation and access to learning. This role would suit someone who is calm under pressure, able to build rapport quickly and confident working with young people who may initially be reluctant to engage.
You will:
• Support pupils with SEMH, autism, ADHD and behaviour-related needs on a 1:1 and small-group basis
• Build positive, trusting relationships with students who may have had difficult experiences in mainstream education
• Use consistent behaviour strategies, de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches
• Support pupils during lessons, transitions and unstructured parts of the school day
• Help students develop confidence, resilience, independence and positive learning habits
• Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and senior leaders to maintain structure and consistency
• Encourage pupils to re-engage with education and, where appropriate, work towards reintegration or positive next steps
What We’re Looking For
• Previous experience supporting young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, autism or ADHD
• A calm, confident and resilient approach to behaviour support
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to act as a positive role model
• Experience in a PRU, alternative provision, secondary school, youth work, mentoring, sports coaching or behaviour support role would be highly desirable
• Someone who can remain consistent, professional and patient even when pupils are dysregulated
• Full-time availability from after May half term and commitment to a long-term role
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people who need consistency, structure and belief from the adults around them. The school is looking for someone who can bring calm authority, empathy and energy to the role, supporting pupils to make better choices and rebuild their confidence in education.
