Axcis are pleased to be working with a mainstream school in Radstock who are looking to recruit an experienced teaching assistant to work in their autism base. The base is attached to the main school and the classes are smaller of around 7-10 pupils. The role starts immediately and will potentially go on till the end of term for the right candidate. You will be general in class support so you will help all of the students with their studies. Experience of working with children or adults with autism is a must.
The school is in a great location and is easy to access on public transport but it also has a large car park for staff that drive. The school has good Ofsted ratings and is well liked by all staff that go there; many of them taken on permanently if they make a good impression.
Some of the students are non verbal and knowledge of Makaton and PECS will put you at an advantage. You will need to be adaptable and able to build rapport quickly. Routine is very important to many of the students who rely on timetables. Some of them can present with challenging behaviour especially when there is a change in their routine. You will need to remain calm and unfazed with challenging behaviour. If you have a Team Teach certificate even better!
As sponsors of the National Autistic Society and other notable SEND organisations, Axcis takes it duty of care to the profession seriously and we do our best to find only the best staff for the schools we work with.
