SEND Teaching Assistant – Speech & Language Support – Canning Town Location: Canning Town, East London Start Date: September 2025 Salary: £89+ per day (based on experience and qualifications) Contract Type: Full-time, Term Time Only Working Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm Employer: Axcis Education – UK leaders in SEND recruitment Overview: Axcis Education is recruiting for a SEND Teaching Assistant to support pupils with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in a vibrant and inclusive primary school in Canning Town. You will be working across EYFS and Key Stage 1, supporting children with delayed expressive and receptive language, some of whom also have diagnoses of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). This role is perfect for someone with experience in speech and language support, or for a graduate in linguistics, psychology, or speech therapy looking to build school-based experience. Key Responsibilities: Provide 1:1 and small-group support for children with speech and language needs Implement SLT programmes (under guidance from school-based Speech & Language Therapists) Use visuals, symbols, Makaton, and other communication aids to support understanding Model clear, structured language and help pupils express themselves in context Monitor progress and support with communication-focused interventions Liaise with class teachers, SENCOs, and external therapists Encourage interaction, social communication, and participation in group activities Help create a language-rich, inclusive classroom environment About the School: Two-form entry, Ofsted-rated “Good” primary school with a strong inclusion ethos Speech & Language base with direct input from NHS and private therapists Warm, supportive leadership and SEND team Easily accessible via DLR and Jubilee Line (Canning Town station) Opportunities for training and development in communication strategies and SEND best practice The Ideal Candidate Will: Have experience working with SLCN, DLD, or language-delayed pupils in a school or clinical setting Be confident using visual aids, modelling language, and supporting social skills Be patient, nurturing, and able to adapt support strategies to suit the child Possess excellent communication skills and attention to detail Be a good team player, able to liaise effectively with professionals and parents Hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service Desirable (but not essential): Background in speech therapy, linguistics, or psychology Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, Attention Autism, or Colourful Semantics Previous experience with early years and KS1 pupils with communication difficulties Experience implementing targets from speech and language programmes or EHCPs Why Work with Axcis Education?
