The Role:
Axcis Education is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Science Teacher to join a well-regarded specialist secondary school in Newham, East London, starting September 2025. This is a full-time teaching role within a setting that caters for students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
You will teach KS3 and KS4 Science, delivering a carefully adapted curriculum to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Key Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated Science lessons to small groups of students
Modify content to meet a range of ability levels, including Entry Level and Functional Science qualifications
Integrate visual aids, interactive experiments, and real-life applications to support understanding
Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, Therapists, and the SENCO to implement EHCPs
Foster a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom environment that supports social, emotional, and academic development
Track student progress, contribute to reports, and attend annual reviews
Promote independence, curiosity, and confidence in learning through science
About the School:
A well-established specialist secondary school in the heart of Newham
Supports students aged 11–16 with SEND, primarily autism and MLD
Class sizes are small (typically 6–8 students) with excellent TA support
Emphasis on therapeutic teaching, communication, and practical life skills
Facilities include a science lab adapted for SEND, therapy rooms, and sensory spaces
Strong leadership team and a collaborative staff culture
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
Experience teaching Science at KS3 and/or KS4
A genuine passion for working with students with SEND
Strong differentiation and behaviour management skills
The ability to adapt curriculum materials for learners with a range of cognitive and communication needs
A reflective and collaborative approach to teaching
Desirable (but not essential):
Previous experience in a specialist school or SEND setting
Knowledge of autism-friendly practices, including TEACCH, sensory integration, and visual support strategies
Experience with EHCPs, small group teaching, and therapeutic interventions
Training in Team Teach or similar de-escalation strategies
