SEMH Teaching Assistant – Secondary School – Stratford (East London) Location: Stratford, East London Start Date: September 2025 Salary: £89+ per day (depending on experience) Contract Type: Full-time, Term Time Only Working Hours: 8:30am – 3:45pm Employer: Axcis Education – The UK’s leading SEND recruitment agency Overview: Axcis Education is working with an inclusive mainstream secondary school in Stratford to recruit a confident and committed SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a full-time, long-term role starting in September 2025, ideal for someone with experience in behaviour support, youth mentoring, or mental health care who wants to make a lasting impact on young people struggling to thrive in a traditional school environment. Key Responsibilities: Provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH needs Build consistent, trusting relationships with pupils and offer emotional support Help students regulate their behaviour and develop positive coping strategies Support learning across core subjects and during unstructured times (breaks/lunch) Reinforce expectations, behaviour plans, and pastoral strategies Work closely with the school’s SENCO, inclusion team, and external agencies Support reintegration for pupils returning from time out or exclusion Maintain records of behaviour incidents, support interventions, and progress About the School: Mixed mainstream secondary school with a dedicated SEMH and inclusion unit Strong leadership team and pastoral staff committed to behaviour support Well-developed referral and intervention system for at-risk pupils Located in Stratford, easily accessible via Central, Jubilee, and Overground lines Staff receive regular training and ongoing professional development The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour, anxiety, or trauma A calm, patient, and consistent demeanour, especially under pressure A background in youth work, psychology, mentoring, or pastoral support Strong interpersonal skills and a resilient, empathetic approach Confidence managing low-level disruption and escalating behaviours A commitment to inclusion and belief in every student’s potential Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one) Desirable (but not essential): Team Teach, PRICE, or other de-escalation training Familiarity with behaviour plans, restorative approaches, or trauma-informed practice Experience in a PRU, alternative provision, or inclusion unit Interest in a long-term career in education, mental health, or social care Why Work with Axcis Education?
