SEMH Teaching Assistant – Secondary PRU – Canning Town Location: Canning Town, East London Start Date: September 2025 (or sooner if available) Salary: £89+ (dependent on experience) Contract Type: Full-time, Term Time Only Working Hours: 8:30am – 3:45pm Employer: Axcis Education – the UK’s leading SEND recruitment agency The Role: Axcis Education is currently recruiting for a confident and resilient Teaching Assistant to work in a Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) based in Canning Town, East London. This is a full-time, term-time-only role beginning in September 2025, with potential for long-term or permanent placement. You will be working with students aged 11–16 who have been permanently excluded from mainstream settings and require intensive behavioural and emotional support. Many pupils in the provision have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as associated diagnoses such as ADHD, ODD, or autism. The school has a well-established behaviour policy, excellent leadership support, and a commitment to helping young people re-engage with education. Key Responsibilities: Supporting pupils with SEMH needs on a 1:1 basis and in small groups Assisting students with managing emotional regulation and coping strategies Promoting positive behaviour and de-escalating challenging situations Supporting classroom learning across core subjects (English, Maths, PSHE) Helping to maintain a structured and supportive environment Building positive, consistent relationships with pupils to establish trust Supporting reintegration plans and behaviour intervention strategies Collaborating closely with teaching staff, safeguarding leads, and external agencies About the Provision: Secondary PRU supporting students aged 11–16 Small class sizes (typically 6–8 students per group) Strong emphasis on emotional literacy, self-regulation, and life skills Supportive senior leadership and therapeutic team on-site Conveniently located in Canning Town, accessible via Jubilee Line, DLR, and bus routes The Ideal Candidate Will: Have experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour, SEMH, or in alternative provisions Be calm, consistent, and emotionally resilient in demanding situations Have a background in youth work, pastoral care, sports coaching, mentoring, or similar Be able to set and maintain boundaries with empathy and authority Be comfortable working in an environment where behaviour incidents may occur Possess excellent communication skills and a team-focused approach Hold or be willing to obtain an enhanced DBS on the Update Service Desirable (but not essential): Team Teach or de-escalation training Psychology or education-related qualifications Knowledge of trauma-informed practices or restorative approaches Experience working in PRUs, APs, or similar SEMH settings Why Work with Axcis Education?
