Axcis is working with a Secondary school in Dagenham, looking for a teaching assistant to support students with PMLD. The school is a vibrant and inclusive environment, dedicated to supporting pupils aged 11–19 with a range of complex needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). The school provides a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where every student is valued as an individual. With small class sizes, a multidisciplinary team, and a strong emphasis on sensory, therapeutic, and life skills-based learning, we aim to maximise each pupil’s independence, communication, and quality of life. The Role is to support pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) in a secondary school setting, ensuring they access education in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment tailored to their individual needs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide one-to-one or small-group support for pupils with PMLD.
• Assist with physical and personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, mobility, and medical needs where appropriate (training provided).
• Support pupils in accessing the curriculum using specialist equipment, communication aids, and sensory materials.
• Promote pupils’ independence, confidence, and self-esteem.
• Prepare learning resources under the guidance of teaching staff.
• Support in delivering lessons adapted to PMLD pupils’ needs
• Provide feedback to teachers on student progress and challenges.
• Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists (e.g. speech & language, physio), and families.
• Uphold the school’s policies and values regarding inclusion, safeguarding, and equality.
Requirements:
• Experience working with children or young people with special educational needs (particularly PMLD, SLD, or complex needs).
• Patience, empathy, and a caring approach.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently when needed.
• Awareness of safeguarding and child protection policies.
• CACHE Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent.
• Basic Makaton, PECS, or other communication tool knowledge.
