Job Title: Learning Coach
Teaching Assistant – SEND Department (Mainstream College) Location: Merton, Southwest London Start Date: ASAP or February 2026 Contract: Long-term (initially until July 2026) Are you passionate about supporting young people with special educational needs? We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND provision within a well-established mainstream college in Merton. This provision supports young adults aged 16–25 with moderate to severe learning disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Condition and other complex support needs. It offers a safe, structured and nurturing environment focused on developing independence, confidence and essential life skills. The Role As a Teaching Assistant, you will support learners through highly individualised programmes and play a vital role in their day-to-day development. Responsibilities include: – Supporting students one-to-one and in small groups – Assisting with academic learning, personal care routines and break times – Supporting learners during short walks, travel training or community-based activities – Working closely with teaching staff and specialists to promote a positive, inclusive learning environment Curriculum & Focus Areas Learners follow personalised programmes designed to support: – Preparing for Adulthood outcomes, including independence, employability, health and community participation – Personal, social and communication development – Functional life skills such as cooking, travel training and self-care – Work experience and community-based learning opportunities Facilities & Support The provision offers dedicated learning spaces, common areas, quiet rooms and practical facilities including kitchens, laundry areas and outdoor garden spaces. Learners are supported by a specialist multidisciplinary team, with a strong emphasis on consistency, structure and person-centred practice. Working Hours Flexible options available: – 4 days per week: Tuesday to Friday – Or 2 days per week: Tuesday & Thursday – Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm About You You will ideally have: – Experience supporting young people with SEND in an education or care setting – A patient, empathetic and flexible approach – Confidence supporting learners with complex needs – A proactive, collaborative mindset This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine impact while gaining valuable experience in a supportive and inclusive educational setting.
