Salary: £89+ per day (depending on experience)

About the Role:
Axcis Education is working closely with a well-established secondary special school in Harrow to recruit a skilled and passionate Autism Support Assistant. The school supports young people aged 11 to 18 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), often combined with moderate learning difficulties, social communication needs, and sensory processing differences.
This is a long-term, full-time position starting in September 2025, with potential for a permanent offer for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide 1:1 or small group support to autistic students in KS3 and KS4 (some sixth form support may be required)
Work closely with teaching staff, therapists, and inclusion teams to follow EHCPs and personalised learning plans
Support the delivery of a differentiated, life-skills-focused curriculum, including functional literacy and numeracy
Help students navigate the secondary routine and manage transitions between lessons
Use autism-specific strategies such as visual timetables, social stories, PECS, or Makaton
Encourage social interaction, independence, and emotional regulation through targeted activities
Support students with anxiety, sensory regulation, and behaviour using a calm, low-arousal approach
Promote engagement in classroom activities and off-site learning sessions (e.g. community visits, vocational trips)

The Ideal Candidate Will:
Have experience supporting autistic young people, preferably in a school or youth work setting
Be empathetic, proactive, and emotionally resilient
Have a good understanding of the challenges autistic teenagers face with social interaction and routine changes
Be confident in managing behaviour support plans and using structured, visual approaches
Be a clear communicator who can work collaboratively with staff and families
Be open to supporting students with personal care and sensory needs if required
Hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service
Desirable (Not Essential):
Training in autism-specific approaches (TEACCH, SCERTS, SPELL, Zones of Regulation)
Familiarity with behaviour regulation tools such as emotion charts or social scripts
Experience supporting EHCP targets and contributing to pupil progress tracking
A background in psychology, youth work, education, or care
NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent in education or health/social care
