Job Title: Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistant
Location: Yeovil, Somerset
Pay: £14.61 – £15.00 per hour (PAYE)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:45pm
We are working with a specialist education setting in Yeovil to recruit caring and enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to support pupils with additional learning needs.
The school supports children and young people with Autism Spectrum Conditions and Moderate Learning Difficulties, alongside associated communication, sensory, social and emotional needs.
Its approach centres around recognising each pupil as an individual, helping them discover their strengths and equipping them with the skills they need for the future. Learning extends beyond traditional lessons, with opportunities to develop social interaction, communication, practical abilities and confidence through a varied and engaging curriculum.
As a Teaching Assistant, you will be an important part of this journey, helping pupils overcome barriers, discover new interests and celebrate their achievements along the way.
What Does the Role Involve?
You'll be working closely with teaching staff to make learning accessible, enjoyable and relevant to individual pupils. This may include:
• Supporting pupils with Autism and Moderate Learning Difficulties throughout the school day.
• Helping deliver personalised learning activities that reflect individual targets and abilities.
• Using communication techniques, visual resources and other strategies to help pupils understand, express themselves and interact with others.
• Encouraging positive friendships, social interaction and confidence.
• Supporting activities that develop practical and everyday independence.
• Getting involved in creative lessons, drama, outdoor learning and sensory activities.
• Helping pupils understand emotions, develop resilience and build positive relationships.
• Supporting community-based learning and real-world experiences.
• Providing encouragement and reassurance when pupils find learning or social situations difficult.
• Working alongside teachers and other professionals to ensure pupils receive consistent support.
What Kind of Person Are We Looking For?
You don't have to be a qualified teacher to be successful in this position. We're looking for people with the right attitude, a genuine interest in SEND and the ability to connect with children and young people.
Ideally, you will:
• Have experience supporting individuals with Autism, learning difficulties or additional needs.
• Be confident adapting your communication style to suit different individuals.
• Have a calm, friendly and encouraging personality.
• Understand that every pupil learns and develops at their own pace.
• Be creative and willing to get involved in practical and interactive activities.
• Have the patience to support pupils through challenging moments.
• Be committed to promoting independence, self-confidence and positive behaviour.
• Enjoy working collaboratively as part of a supportive team.
Experience can be personal or professional. We are happy to hear from candidates who have supported children or young people with additional needs through family circumstances, care work, youth work, education or other relevant settings.
If you have transferable experience and the right approach, this could be a great opportunity to move into specialist education.
What's On Offer?
• £14.61 – £15.00 per hour PAYE.
• Monday to Friday working pattern.
• Hours of 8:30am – 3:45pm.
• No weekend working.
• The opportunity to gain experience in a specialist SEND environment.
• Exposure to a range of learning, communication and therapeutic approaches.
• A rewarding position where you can see the impact of your support.
• Dedicated support from an experienced education recruitment agency.
