Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant Location: Bournemouth, Dorset Start Date: January 2026 – for the remainder of the academic year Contract: Full-Time, Term Time Only (Monday–Friday, 08:30–16:00) Pay Rate: £90–£100 per day (depending on experience) An established specialist secondary school in Bournemouth is seeking a confident, empathetic, and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team from January 2026. This rewarding role involves supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to re-engage with learning and develop positive relationships and behaviour strategies. You will work closely with pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis, both in the classroom and during structured activities, under the guidance of a highly supportive staff team. A background in sports, coaching, mentoring, or youth work would be highly beneficial, as physical activity and teamwork are central to the school’s therapeutic approach. Key Responsibilities: Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs, encouraging positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing. Build strong, trusting relationships to help pupils feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn. Use effective de-escalation techniques and promote positive behaviour management strategies. Support teachers with lesson delivery, classroom organisation, and targeted interventions. Monitor progress and contribute to individual support plans and pastoral reviews. Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral teams to ensure consistent, holistic support. About You: Experience supporting young people with SEMH, ASC, or behavioural needs in a school, coaching, or youth setting. A calm, patient, and proactive approach, with excellent communication skills. Confidence managing challenging situations with empathy and professionalism. A background in sport or physical education is desirable but not essential. Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service.
