We are recruiting a Learning Support Assistant to join a forward-thinking further education college supporting students aged 16–25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The college offers both day and residential provision, and prides itself on a holistic, inclusive approach to learning. Many students are transitioning from other settings and require tailored support, bridging academic learning with life skills, independence and personal development. The college blends academic and vocational pathways and provides specialist support such as exam access arrangements and individualised caseloads. The Learning Support department is central to the inclusive ethos, ensuring students with EHCPs or other learning needs can fully access their programmes and thrive within a nurturing community. The Role As a Learning Support Assistant, you will: Be assigned a caseload of students (often with EHCPs or SEND support) and work closely with them both inside and outside class to scaffold learning, clarify tasks, provide scaffolding or scaffolding removal, or help with organising work. Work collaboratively with teachers, the SEND team and higher-level staff to adapt resources, plan interventions, and monitor students’ progress. Deliver occasional small-group or one-to-one support sessions (e.g. revision, study skills, literacy, numeracy) based on individual needs. Support exam access arrangements, assist during assessments, and ensure students receive their accommodations. Build trusting, consistent relationships with students, acting as a stable point of support in their educational journey. Contribute to inclusive practices, ensuring that all students feel valued, safe and able to engage with the curriculum. Participate in departmental meetings, training (especially around trauma-informed or therapeutic approaches), and contribute to continuous improvement of support provision. Person Specification We are looking for someone who: Has experience working with young people with SEND (or in a learning support/education context). Is skilled at differentiating approaches, adapting materials and offering scaffolding or extension as appropriate. Demonstrates empathy, patience, resilience and the ability to form positive, stable relationships with learners who may have faced interrupted education or complex barriers. Is organised, reliable, and able to manage a caseload of students, track progress, and liaise with staff. Has strong communication skills, both with students and professional colleagues. Understands, or is willing to learn, best practices in inclusive education, safeguarding, and (ideally) trauma-informed care. Is flexible and willing to work across day and residential settings as required by the college.
