Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
SEMH Teaching Assistant – Secondary PRU | From £94/day | Barking & Dagenham | September Start | Full Time | Long Term Supply
Axcis are working with a supportive and specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Barking & Dagenham to recruit a confident and resilient Teaching Assistant to join their KS4 team from September. This provision supports students aged 14–16 who are unable to access mainstream education, many of whom have social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH). Located just a short walk from Barking Station, the school also offers free on-site parking for staff.
The setting prides itself on creating a calm, therapeutic environment where relationships are at the heart of everything they do. With a strong behaviour support team and consistent structures in place, the school is committed to helping each pupil reach their personal and academic potential. The school was recently praised by Ofsted for its strong leadership and clear vision for inclusion.
In this role, you will:
• Provide 1:1 or small group support for students aged 14–16 with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour.
• Use de-escalation strategies and trauma-informed practice to build trust and encourage positive engagement.
• Support students both in class and in structured interventions, helping with emotional regulation, attendance, and progress.
• Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral leads, and therapists to deliver consistent, relational support.
• Model boundaries and routines, encouraging self-confidence and motivation in preparation for post-16 transitions.
What we’re looking for:
• Previous experience supporting secondary-aged students with SEMH or behavioural needs.
• A confident, patient, and emotionally intelligent approach to building relationships with vulnerable young people.
• Experience working in a PRU, AP, mainstream school, or youth support environment.
• A commitment to safeguarding and consistency in practice — reliability and calm under pressure are essential.
