Job Title: Bank Child Support Worker
If you’ve got a big heart, a good sense of humour, and don’t mind getting a bit messy (sometimes literally), then this might be your kind of role. We're working with a fantastic special school in Thornbury (just outside Bristol), and they’re looking for bank staff to jump in and support when they need an extra pair of hands. Whether you’re free a day a week or more, this could be a great shout. A bit about the school (from me, not a brochure) I’ve worked with this school for a while now and honestly, it’s one of my favourites. It’s purpose-built, so everything is set up to actually work for the kids — proper spaces, loads of sensory resources, and a real feeling of calm. The staff are super friendly (they’ll always say hello), and you get the sense that they all really care. It’s not just about getting through the day — it’s about helping each student feel seen, supported and celebrated. Honestly, it’s a lovely place to spend your day. What you’ll actually be doing: Supporting students 1:1 or in small groups — some of the students have profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), so things are very hands-on Helping with personal care (yes, that can include washing and toileting — it’s all part of the job and fully supported) Getting stuck into practical, sensory learning — lots of art, music, cooking, and hands-on activities Working closely with other staff — you’re never just left to it, there’s a whole team in each class The kind of person we think would smash this: You’ve got a calm, kind and patient vibe You’re good with people — whether that’s building trust with a student or chatting with staff and families You don’t mind rolling up your sleeves — some of the care side of things can be personal, and that doesn’t phase you You’re a team player who can also work independently if needed Maybe you’ve worked with SEN before (bonus points if it’s PMLD), or maybe you’ve worked in care or early years — or maybe you just have the right attitude and want to learn Experience that helps (but isn’t essential): Makaton, PECS, or other ways of communicating beyond words Manual handling, hoist training — or just being open to learning A good eye for when something isn’t quite right — especially around safeguarding or medical needs Oh, and being able to laugh when someone throws paint, water, or spaghetti in your general direction Why this role’s a win: You’ll be part of something genuinely meaningful You can choose when you work — ideal if you need flexibility The school’s just outside the city — easy to get to from the M5, and no Bristol rush hour drama There’s free parking (always worth a mention) Why work with us at Axcis? We’re specialists in SEN recruitment and work closely with schools like this one. We get what you do, and we’re here to support you all the way — with training, advice, and friendly check-ins (not just sending you into roles and forgetting about you). You’ll also get: Competitive weekly pay Access to training and CPD A consultant (that’s me!) who actually picks up the phone and wants to hear how your day went What now? Click ‘Apply’ and send over your CV — doesn’t have to be fancy, just up-to-date. Or, if you want to chat about the role first, give Laura at the Axcis South West & Wales office a ring.
