Job Title: Bank Child Support Worker (SEND)
This is one of those roles that makes you stop and think – this is what education should be. If you're looking for a job that’s about people, purpose, and making each day feel like it really counts, keep reading. I’m working with a fantastic SEND school, just outside of Bristol, and we’re looking for a trainee teaching assistant to join their team. You don’t need loads of experience. In fact, this could be perfect for someone exploring a career in education, care, or anything people-centred. It’s about your attitude, not your CV. A quick word from me (hi, I’m Laura – I recruit for SEN roles at Axcis): I’ve visited this school recently and I can honestly say: it’s special. Yes, the facilities are incredible — there’s a hydrotherapy pool, soft play, sensory rooms — but what really sticks with me is the feeling when you walk in. It’s calm, warm, and intentional. Staff speak about the pupils with such genuine affection, and there’s this underlying sense of we’re building something really good here. The headteacher joined at the beginning of this academic year, but she’s already had a huge impact. She’s the kind of leader who’s genuinely invested — in both the students and the staff. It’s clear she’s shaping a culture that’s collaborative, emotionally intelligent and deeply inclusive. If I were starting out in SEN, this is the sort of place I’d want to learn in. So what will you actually be doing? No two days are ever the same, but your role might include: Supporting pupils 1:1 or in small groups with communication, sensory and physical needs Getting stuck into creative and therapeutic activities – think messy art, music, movement, hydrotherapy, or outdoor play Using tools like Makaton, PECS or visual schedules to help students communicate Supporting with personal care (feeding, toileting, etc) in a way that maintains dignity and trust Helping students develop independence and life skills through real-life experiences Creating joy – whether that’s through a water play session, a sensory walk, or a few minutes of calm in the ball pool (which, I’ve been told, staff do occasionally sneak into) What kind of person does well here? Honestly, it’s not about a polished CV or loads of qualifications. It’s about being the kind of person these young people need in their corner. We're looking for people who are: Warm, grounded, and calm (especially in tricky moments) Genuinely interested in learning how to support others with complex needs Great at working as part of a team – but also confident being proactive Reflective – you ask questions, take feedback and want to grow Open-minded – willing to try new things, think outside the box, and get a bit messy Whether you’re a recent graduate, a former carer, someone returning to work, or just someone with the right heart – you’ll be welcomed and supported. Bonus skills (helpful, but not dealbreakers!): Experience with communication tools (PECS, Makaton, AAC) Any background in care, therapy, early years or creative subjects A basic understanding of PMLD or sensory needs – or curiosity to learn Comfort with personal care and a respectful, person-centred approach What you'll get in return: A school that genuinely values staff wellbeing (not just a poster in the staffroom) Opportunities for training and career development – from CPD to teaching apprenticeships A warm, friendly team where you’ll feel like part of something The chance to go home each day knowing you made a real difference Why Axcis? We’re the UK’s leading SEND recruitment agency, and we get what this work is about. With us, you’ll get: Weekly pay, pension, and holiday pay Access to free CPD and training opportunities Ongoing support from me and the team — real people who actually care how your day went Opportunities to explore different settings if you’re still figuring out where you want to be Ready to apply? Click “Apply” and send your CV (doesn’t have to be fancy — just up to date). Or if you want to chat about the school first, give me a call — I’m Laura at Axcis South West & Wales. I’d love to talk you through it. This is the start of something meaningful! Let’s get you started.
