Work Permits

Note: You cannot apply for a work permit yourself. Your prospective employer (a UK school) must apply for it on your behalf.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to get Work Permits and they are really only available for teachers who specialise in Maths, Science or Special Needs.

Can I apply?
Any overseas national who meets the criteria listed below may be eligible to apply for a work permit.

  • They have a UK employer willing to employ them at a senior level or in a role that demands specialised skills. The employer must also be willing to sponsor the prospective employee through the work permit scheme.
  • They hold either a degree qualification and two years post graduate work experience in a related field outside the UK, or,
  • They have five years work experience in that related field either at a senior level or involving specialised skills.

People from visa national countries must obtain entry clearance from their nearest British consulate before travelling to the UK to undertake work permit employment.

As a general guideline, work permit applications take between 2 - 3 months to process.

How long may I stay in the UK?
A work permit may be issued for any length of time up to five years. After completing five years on a work permit the holder may apply for Residency / Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

Does it allow me to work?
Yes - for the sponsoring employer only. If you leave their employment or change employers you will need to seek a new permit. .....
