Online Webinars

Following the success of the 2011/2012 webinars - Axcis Education Recruitment and The National Autistic Society (NAS) will be producing a second series of six free 1-hour online autism webinars, covering key topics to help you develop your skill base and learning.

Education is a fundamental part of every child's life but far too many children with autism are not getting the education they need. With the right support, every child has the opportunity to succeed. Parents and young people agree that knowledge of autism, more than anything else, helps children's needs to be met.

That's why Axcis Education Recruitment and the National Autistic Society developed this series of webinars so that teachers and other autism professionals can learn the tools and strategies they need to support children with autism effectively.

The online webinars are FREE to watch.

Webinar 4 - Educational provision and teaching approaches for children with PDA (Watch this Webinar)

                   was conducted on Wednesday 20th  March 2013 (6:30pm - 7:30pm)

Speakers: Ruth Fidler, Assistant Head, Sutherland House School

Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome (PDA) is a lifelong disability that affects boys and girls equally. The main difficulty for people with PDA is their avoidance of the everyday demands made by other people, due to their high anxiety levels when they feel that they are not in control. However, because they tend to have better social communication and interaction skills than other people on the spectrum, they can use those skills to disguise their resistance through common avoidance behaviour. As a result, people with PDA usually experience increased difficulty throughout their lives. They often imitate inappropriate behaviour or come across as overbearing, and may exhibit an obsessive desire to dominate socially, which can be extremely disruptive within classroom settings. This webinar provides an overview of what PDA is and discusses strategies and techniques that will help teachers and SENCOs support people with the disorder in the classroom.
