Jennifer, American Teacher
Hi Jennifer, how many years experience do you have teaching in the US?
About 1 year or so. I was a fairly new teacher before coming to the UK.
What made you want to teach in the UK?
I didn’t really want to teach. It made it easier to for me though to be able to live in the UK.
Did you need a Visa? If so, what Visa are you on? How hard was it to get?
Yeh, I have a UK National Visa. I had no problem at all.
When you arrived did you have friends/family to stay with?
My dad, he was here already. That's really why I wanted to live in the UK.
I managed to find a place of my own. It took me about 2 weeks to find a good place with decent rent, because the rents are really expensive here. I did a lot of walking to go and see suitable places.
How have you found teaching in London? Good points?
I find it Okay. Although, because I do SEN, I am finding it a little difficult at the moment. Teaching in the UK is very different to the US, but I’m finding my feet, so it’s getting better by the day.
What things should teachers be aware of when planning to come here?
I guess I would just tell them to be very open minded. They must be very open to different teaching methods because teaching in the UK is very different, so I would warn them about that.
Have you any regrets?
None at all.
Have you done much travelling (if they have been here a while)? What destinations?
I try to travel every half term so I have done a lot of travelling. Some of my favourite places were Australia (love the weather there), Morocco & Italy. I have seen a lot of Europe as well.
Would you recommend the London experience to other American teachers? Why and what have you enjoyed?
Definitely. I have enjoyed travelling and meeting new people from a range of different cultures and backgrounds. It's taught me so much. I've have learnt to see the big picture and be very open minded.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
No. I’m just enjoying myself. You just gotta have an open mind and enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences, that's all.
Thank you for your time Jen
