London Underground / Tube

The tube is an AMAZING way to get around London. The trains run all around under the city and run frequently (every 2-5 minutes). There are 287 stations around London so you can get nearly EVERYWHERE on it.

The Tube can be a great thing or it can be a nightmare. It does get VERY crowded during peak hours and there can be delays due to many problems; the most common ones are signal failure, faulty trains and the doors being jammed.

Remember that you don’t need to press the button to open the doors on the underground. They open automatically, however, on the overland you WILL need to press the button to open the doors. If you don’t you will be getting off at the next stop.

Courtesy on the Underground

  • Please let the customers off the train before getting on.

  • When on the escalators remember to stand on the right and keep moving on the left. People on their way to work or in a rush can be very abrupt with you if you are standing on the left.

  • On the escalators, please stand on the right and walk on the left.

Commonly heard phrases on the tube:

  • Please mind the gap between the train and the platform.

  • This is a ____________ line train to (The destination)
For example, ‘This is a picadilly line train to Heathrow’.

  • Mind the closing doors

  • Please move right down inside the train (To make room for more passengers trying to board the train - people tend to prefer to stand near the doors so it’s easier for them to exit the train but it does cause congestion problems).
