Secondary Teacher Jobs

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops (Henry Brooks Adams)

A secondary teacher works with pupils between 11-18 years of age and has a specialist subject area which can be taught to A level and usually a second subject which can be taught to GCSE. As with all teaching posts with children, a full teaching qualification is required along with QTS. This allows you to teach in state and independent Secondary school with KS3 (Yrs 7-9), KS4 (Yrs 10-11) and KS5 (Yrs 12-13).

KS4 is GCSE level and KS5 is AS and A level. Class sizes up to 16 yrs can be between 20 and 30 pupils and can be mixed ability, streamed or partially streamed (eg for Maths) depending on the school. Subject areas have a HOD and most schools have extra pastoral teams, eg HOY. The teacher may well have to manage other staff in the classroom, eg Teaching Assistants or SEN/Language support staff and is expected to undertake continuing CPD.

A teacher can expect to be a Form Tutor and liaise with parents and carers, welfare staff, SENCOs, social workers and other professionals. The teacher has to inspire pupils whilst adhering to the NC and does this with inventive lesson planning, use of resources and teaching to achievable outcomes at all levels. Secondary teachers often enjoy the opportunity to teach their subject to smaller groups at A level standard and results at both A level and GCSE are success criteria. Working with young people is a demanding, rewarding and exasperating role which bring huge satisfaction to the teacher who sees pupils progress and thrive as they become young adults.
