School Support roles covers a huge range of posts: TAs, NNs, Technicians, Cover Supervisors, Invigilators and Instructors, Admin/Finance and Bursars included. Our focus is posts which involve working with pupils, ie teaching assistants, Nursery Nurses and Technicians. Technicians work largely in Science, ICT and DT, areas in which resources need to be prepared for practical sessions. Experiments need to be set up in advance for example and because of health and safety issues the teacher may need extra support with this kind of practical teaching. Technicians are expected to have a thorough knowledge base, for example a Science technician will often be a Science graduate. However, an academic background is not enough and anyone interested in this kind of role needs to be keen to interact with young people. A DT technician would usually be working with Resistant Materials so may come from a practical background but needs to be workshop trained and certified.

Cover Supervisors and Instructors needs to be educated to degree level and may even be teachers who do not have QTS or are FE qualified. A CS would expect work to be set and has to manage the classroom, an Instructor would be expected to prepare materials in their subject area. Invigilators supervise examinations and do not need a specific qualification.
Ideally those applying for School Support roles need to be either qualified in education or to degree level  or may have an interest in or experience of working with young people in other areas, eg social care, voluntary work. They can also be a way of gaining experience for someone interested in a career in teaching.
