There is immense scope for promotion and career development within teaching. CPD is part of every teacher’s expectation and can be used to gain very specific skills. Some teachers prefer to remain in the classroom and become AST or Advanced Skill Teachers. In primary schools they may choose to focus on a subject area, eg Maths. Other roles in primary might include taking responsibility for a whole Year group or moving into SEN/SENCO roles. In secondary schools roles include HOD or pastoral posts like HOY. The changes and developments in Teaching and Learning mean that there are specialist posts becoming available in a wide variety of areas which may be of interest. Assistant and Deputy Headships would mean looking into the NPQH qualification.
