Peta, South African Teacher

Hi Peta, how many years experience do you have teaching in South Africa?

Hi, I trained mostly in South Africa but did some extra courses in the UK. I have close to 15 years experience.

What made you want to teach in the UK?

My husband works in the medical sector. He was offered a position in the UK, so it was a family decision to relocate.

Did you need a Visa? If so, what Visa are you on? How hard was it to get?

Yes, We were originally on a highly skilled migrant visa, but are now on a Indefinite leave to remain visa. In terms of paperwork and time I guess it was difficult to get. Once all the red tape is out of the way, it’s just a matter of waiting. Although it did cost us a 1000 pounds!

When you arrived did you have friends/family to stay with?

Not really. We only knew a few of my husbands work colleagues. My husbands firm provided us with accommodation at first. We now have our own place in Wapping.

How have you found teaching in London? Good points?

I have been doing only supply work at present so the best part is being exposed to such a wide variety of different children from different upbringings.

What things should teachers be aware of when planning to come here?

Just be aware that children’s behaviour is the same all over the world. I learnt that as a supply teacher you have to stand your ground and let them know that you are in charge. If you have a positive attitude and are here to make a difference, nothing can go wrong.

Have you any regrets?

None, whatsoever!

Have you done much travelling (if they have been here a while)? What destinations?

Yes! We will sometimes take the train to Paris for the weekend. We have been to Prague, Ireland, Scotland, basically the whole of Europe and last year we went on holiday in Canada. Travel is very easy once you’re based in the UK.

Would you recommend the London experience to other South African teachers? Why and what have you enjoyed?

Yes! As a teacher it is good to expose yourself to all sorts of situations as this can only make you better.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I have been teaching in the Tower Hamlets mostly and just want to make it known that one has to be patient with these kids as some of them come from very difficult backgrounds.

Thank you for your time Peta
