Supply Teacher of the Year, June 2007
MATHS SPECIALIST TEACHER VOTED ONE OF THE UK’S TOP TEMPORARY WORKERS
Maths teacher Marwan Elnaghi has been declared one of the UK’s top temporary workers.
Marwan has been awarded the highly commended prize in the Supply Teacher category in the One in a Million Award, given to the UK’s top temporary worker.
The award is the highlight of National Temporary Workers Week, which is being staged from June 4-8. The week is organised by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the trade association for the UK’s £24.8 billion private recruitment and staffing industry.
Marwan was nominated by Axcis Education of London for his abilities as a talented and reliable Maths/ICT teacher. They single out his flexibility to travel on assignments to schools at short notice along with his dedication to his work as being two characteristics which make him a very special supply teacher.
Even when faced with a challenging inner-city school he has persevered in raising expectations within the Maths department and goes out of his way to play a role in influencing a student on their outlook on life.
When in more academic environments, they say, Marwan from Notting Hill, London, challenges his students with a high degree of subject knowledge which led one of his students to say he was “the only teacher who made me see it like that.”
As well as taking on assignments, Marwan is also currently studying part-time for his PhD in order to improve his own knowledge and understanding of his chosen subject.
Emily Townsend from Axcis said of him: “If we had 100 teachers like Marwan, we could easily find work for them all. He really is a caring and professional individual.”
She added that when the agency offered a training session to schools on how to get the best out of supply staff and agencies, Marwan volunteered to come in unpaid and talk about his experiences. “He felt this was really important as he himself could see how the treatment of supply staff by some schools is detrimental to the learning achieved by the students.”
National Temporary Workers Week celebrates the contribution the UK’s 1.2 million strong temporary workforce makes to the economy and in keeping business on the move. It also highlights how working in a temporary, contract or interim suits increasing numbers of people in allowing them flexibility to work to suit their busy lifestyles.
Marcia Roberts, the REC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We never cease to be amazed and inspired by our One in a Million winners and their dedication to the work assignments they undertake. Marwan is the perfect example of a teacher who has gone that extra mile to help schools, their students and indeed, his agency to raise their sights and standards.”
