Candidate Training
At Axcis Education we understand that working with individuals with SEND, although very rewarding, can often be a challenging and difficult job to do. This is our prime motivation for ensuring that our candidates are constantly learning new things and developing their skills in order to successfully support the young people they work with.
Axcis Education is the foremost specialist supplier of quality SEN teachers and support staff in the UK. Our commitment to working with government and professional partners, plus our duty of care, ensures the wide ranging changes in education have a positive effect on the lives of young people with SEND we ultimately support. We work with our professional partners, NAS, NASEN, NASS and SSAT, to provide induction and training for candidates in Team Teach, Makaton, PECS and others. Please see below for summaries on each of the courses we provide as well as the scheduled dates and cost of each one.
If you are keen on attending training then please register with us, keep an eye on this page, like us on facebook, follow us on twitter, link with us on LinkedIn or keep an eye on your email for the latest updates.
Managing Challenging Behaviour
Teacher Induction: this seminar is useful for qualified teachers embarking on a period working on supply. It offers advice on getting the best out of your experience in schools, explains child protection related to supply work, offers helpful advice on classroom management and also explains a little about different special needs environments. It also includes useful tips on how to maximize your chances of being offered supply work through Axcis. The course is mostly consultant lead in a presentation format, but offers a summary quiz at the end as well as opening up to more specific questions. The powerpoint slides are handed out so candidates can follow and make notes during the presentation.
Charge = FREE. If you would like to book a place on this course please email candidatetraining@axcis.co.uk or call your local office.
Support Staff Induction: this seminar is fantastic for non-teaching candidates who are new to agency work or that have just moved into the education sector from another industry. The topics covered during this seminar include: the practicalities of working on supply; the direct responsibilities of Support Staff; tips of the supply trade; Child Protection and Behaviour Management. We then close off with questions and answers. Team Teach: Axcis are proud to offer the 12 hour TEAM TEACH training course. The course is run over two days and will give you a new outlook on how to work with individuals with emotional and behavioural difficulties in different types of SEN schools. The philosophy of the course is to concentrate on de-escalation before using physical intervention. If it's necessary on occasion to use physical intervention the course will teach you how to do this and the necessary procedures before and after. As this course is very costly for Axcis to run there is a charge to candidates who want to attend. This will cover the cost of hiring the venue, light refreshments and your official TEAM TEACH work books. Due to the popularity of this course we are unfortunately only able to confirm places once payment has been received.
Charge = £35 - £50. If you would like to book a place on this course please email candidatetraining@axcis.co.uk or call your local office.
Autism Awareness 1: Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism may also experience over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.
Asperger syndrome is a form of autism. People with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language. As this course is run by external speakers there is a small charge to candidates who want to attend., This goes towards the cost of contracting the speaker, producing the take-home resources, providing refreshments and hiring the venue. Speakers all have Asperger syndrome and introduce the topic from a personal perspective Due to the popularity of this course we are unfortunately only able to confirm places once payment has been received.

Sensory Issues within ASD (Autism Awareness 2): Robyn Steward is a fascinating speaker who speaks from the heart about her personal experience with aspergers/autism. Her talks are very informative and interesting and a real eye opener into autistic spectrum disorders. This seminar involves exercises which give you an idea of the experiences people face in every day situations. There are certain tasks she will ask you to carry out as a group to try and replicate the different feelings and senses that are affected due to hyper or hypo sensitivity. Robyn is interactive with her talks and her energy levels are infectious.
Robyn delivers London courses, other regional courses are delivered by speakers in a similar view and with similar content. This course would suit newcomers to the profession and those who need an insight into what it is like living with autism from the individual’s point of view. SEND & Mental Health: Estimates of 1 in 5 children at any one time are experiencing a psychological problem (Bright Futures 1999). 1 in 10 children between the ages of 5-16 estimated to have a diagnosable mental health problem (ONS survey 2004). In 2007 UNICEF declared that growing up in the UK is bleaker than in any wealthy country.
Recent research suggests that at any one time 40% of young people with SEN will be suffering from significant mental health problems and 36% are more likely to have identifiable psychiatric disorders. There is still limited training in schools dealing with this issue and we can only offer an introduction. At risk factors include genetic influences, low IQ and learning disability, specific developmental delay, communication difficulty, physical illness and low esteem. This course helps identify key indicators of which staff need to be aware.

Makaton & PECS: Our introduction to Makaton and PECs seminar is aimed towards people who work with non-verbal (or limited verbal) SEN students. The course gives an overview and some basic examples of the means of communication used widely in special needs schools, and is intended to give you enough information so you can decide if you would like to undertake more formal training in either area. Makaton is an adapted form of sign language and PECs is “Picture Exchange Communication”. Both are very common and an understanding/some basic use of these methods of communication would certainly help to enhance your employability within MLD, SLD, ASD and even mainstream schools. This introductory course is run by Axcis trainers who have themselves been trained in this area and is free of charge. However, places are limited so to ensure your space on a course please book soon to avoid disappointment.
