Bradley, Australian Teacher
Hi Bradley, you trained in Australia How many years experience do you have teaching in Australia before coming to the UK?
Hi Adam, I had 1 years experience in Australia and now have a years experience in London.
What made you want to teach in the UK?
I was travelling and thought it was the only job that would pay well.
Did you need a Visa?
Yes I have a Right to Abode Visa, My mum & grandparents are Scottish.
When you arrived did you have friends/family to stay with?
I stayed in a Hostel then found a shared house.
How did you arrange your accommodation in the shared house?
I used the Internet, it wasn’t difficult just expensive! I used the Gumtree the most. (Adam: The Gumtree is a website you can use to find flatmates in London, it is owned by Ebay and you can visit the site by clicking here)
How have you found teaching in London?
It’s different to back home; there are tougher schools here especially the Secondary schools. Yeah I enjoy it – I don’t mind it. On a good day it’s really good, on a bad day it’s bad.
What things should teachers be aware of when planning to come here?
Maybe get experience in tougher schools back home so you have an idea of what to do but there’s not a lot you could do.
Have you any regrets?
No regrets, I knew I would teach here.
Have you done much travelling?
I’ve traveled a lot, any chance I can get usually school holidays. I’ve been to Europe - Greece, Spain – the tourist places.
Would you recommend the London experience to other Australian teachers?
Yeah sure, it’s good especially if you have a teaching degree, make some money.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
QTS – it’s worth looking into before you come here, I didn’t know about it until most recently. (Adam: QTS stands for Qualified Teacher Status - as an Australian teacher you can teach in the UK without it - to read more please see Qualified Teacher Status)
Thank you for your time Bradley
